The South-Western Region
The South-Western Region. Only 6% of the Bulgarian wine is made here in this beautiful and wild area. Magnificent mountains, alpine lakes, mountain forests. Melnik – both the variety and the place – a type of local ‘cabernet’ is the pride of this region. Bulgaria ranks 20 in the world as far as the volume of wine production is concerned and is the second bottled wine exporting country in the world! [1990]. There is a dry and hot area near the Greek border. The harvests take place a month before the harvests in the rest of Bulgaria. The local wines mature well and smell of fresh tobacco leaves. The production focuses around the cities of Petrich, Damianitza and Harsovo.
