Kitten

Area Description

Location

The Kiten holiday village is located in one of the most famous and attractive nooks of the southern Black Sea coats where the wooded Strandzha Mountain spurs reflect into the clear sea depths. The Kiten holiday village is located in the southeastern part of the Republic of Bulgaria, on the Black Sea coast, 55 km to the southeast of the regional centre of Bourgas, 60 km away from an international airport, 5 km to the south of the municipal centre of Primorsko, and 12 km to the northwest of the centre of the neighbouring municipality of Tsarevo. It is located to the north of the mouth of the Karaagach river (also called the Kiten river), and part of it spreads across the tiny peninsula of Urdoviza.

Kiten started its rapid development as a resort during the 60’s of the 20th century thanks to its favourable tourism resources. In 1962, the village obtained the status of a national resort. The combination of the wooded Strandzha spurs and the sea contributes to the development of Kiten as a resort village and summer sea recreational centre. The village of Kiten has two sand beaches of the total area of approximately 145,000 square meters. The Northern Beach, or the so called Kiten Atliman, is situated at the far end of the bay of the same name. It has an area of approximately 81,000 square meters, which also includes beautiful sand dunes. A high rocky coast surrounds the beach from both sides. The Southern Beach is divided conditionally into two parts: the South Kiten Beach and the Kiten Camping Site Beach. It is located on the Urdoviza bay which is more widely opened to the sea. Its coast line length is 1380 meters. The beaches of the former International Youth Center, Primorsko and South Primorsko, which are among the largest beaches of the Black Sea coast to the south of Bourgas, are located nearby.

The village of Kiten has a mild, sunny, warm, and damp transitional Mediterranean climate. The mean annual temperature is 12°C, the mean daily temperature during summer is 27°C; the summer is warm with about 1700 sunny hours from May until October.

Environment and Tourism

The environmental situation does not involve a threat of industrial pollutions.
Additional tourist services, such as hunting and fishing tourism, trips to the Ropotamo River Reserve and the Strandzha Mountain Park, visits to the villages of Pismenovo and Yasna Polyana, trips to Istanbul, Turkey, are also offered at the resort. Nine beaches (beach lines) are being managed by concessionaires.

Thanks to its unique combination of marvelous beaches and picturesque woodlands intersected by rivers, the Southern Black Sea coast offers excellent opportunities for both sea and ecological tourism. Many reserves preserving the rich biological diversity of the region are located here. These are the Ropotamo Nature Park, the Reserves of Arkutino, Snake Island, and Sea Wormwood. Other reserves in the region are the Alepu Reserve, a seaside marsh separated from the sea by a strip of sand, where many types of birds migrate, and the Sand Lilies Reserve.

Practicing of various types of water sports, such as yachting, underwater fishing, underwater archeology, water-skiing, and others, are offered. Water-wheels, surf boats, jets, a banana, and beach accessories (chaise longues, umbrellas, etc.) can be hired at both beaches.

Bicycles, rickshaws, and mopeds can be hired. A horse centre has been built in the resort, which offers training courses, hall horseback riding, open field horseback riding, a trip in a carriage. Miscellaneous amusements are offered for the children. Neptune nights, concerts, and show programmes are organized. There is a summer cinema for the movie maniacs, which shows the latest movies for the season.

Cultural Monuments

The picturesque sites crossed by ancient roads and strewn with the ruins of fortresses and monasteries make possible the development of various types of tourism. Parts of the resources are the sites of the prehistoric village hills, Thracian tombs, and archeological findings dating back to Roman and Byzantine times.

The Strandzha Mountain is the mountain of the Thracians, the land of dolmens and sanctuaries, Roman tombs and medieval fortress walls, a land where Christian temples and chapels are raised many centuries later on ancient Thracian consecrated grounds. Here paganism and Christianity weave into a colourful wreath outlining the parameters of the Bulgarian spirituality and faith.

Customs and Culture

The Strandzha Mountain is a receptacle of mystic spirituality, beautiful nature, and pastoral landscapes, and surviving pagan folklore customs and traditions. It is a fact that in the village of Bulgari only, the roots of the unique pagan customs have been preserved and mixed in the course of time with the Eastern Orthodox traditions resulting in the nestinari dances on fire in honour of Saints Constantine and Helen. The locals say that here only the nestinari dance not for tourists’ sake but for the sake of the tradition. Furthermore, anyone from the village will be ready to be your guide: he can sell sceneries and recommend a place to go or a thing to see…
