MONASTERIES - Bulgaria is famous for a large number of monasteries. There are almost 160 – these are most often organic monasteries melting with the landscape. The external asceticism is in contrast with rich interiors. You forget about the surrounding world when you enter a monastery with carved wooden walls, decorated with paintings. Only some monasteries are occupied by monks. The role of monasteries has changed over the centuries. After Christian baptism in the 9th century, the Bulgarian tsars built many monasteries, which became the spiritual centers of the country, favorable to spreading and distribution of the Bulgarian language and literacy. The monks rewrote the most important Christian works and own texts.
